2009 Herb of the Year – Bay

Did you know…Bay, Sweet Bay, Bay Laurel – Laurus nobilis, is a tender perennial, native to the Mediterranean and is often grown as a clipped potted plant. The pungent leaves are shiney, slightly rippled and sturdy. They’re prized by cooks and wreath makers and are often added to ‘bouquet garni’ to flavor marinades, soups and stews. The leaves retain as much flavor dried as fresh. Plants are often brought indoors where winters are frosty. Potted bay trees trained as standards are also popular.
